D-ESL

English learning made more motivating and engaging through video games, that’s what the D-ESL project is all about.

About the project

Linguistic diversity and language learning in the EU is important to foster unity, intercultural understanding, employability and mobility. According to the results of the European Survey on Language Competencies measuring foreign language student proficiency, only 42% of tested students reached an independent level. This can be explained by a lack of adaptations for students with specific needs, such as those with ‘Dys’ disorders. Indeed, the APEDA stresses that ‘Dys’ students need more support in language acquisition and foreign language learning than those with no special needs.

Therefore, this project offers support for teachers in adopting innovative tools and practices to create and use video games in their language courses. Consequently, it will increase motivation, engagement, and participation, including those with SLDs. The focus of this project will be on English as Second Language classes (ESL), as 90% of pupils choose this course and as it causes more challenges for ‘Dys’ pupils. It is encouraged to use gamification such as quizzes and games and to practice language skills through informal channels (movies, series, music, travels…). This project will also explore the creation of downloadable video games through different tools, such as Genial.ly, RPGmakerV, Flowlab or PowerPoint.

With DESL, students with special needs will gain more motivation in acquiring foreign language proficiency, through an innovative non-formal and experiential learning.
